Wycoller Village

To the east of Trawden stands the village of Wycoller, originally a Saxon settlement founded eleven centuries ago.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the village became a thriving handloom weaving center, but fell into tragic decline following the invention of the power loom and the movement of the textile industry to the mill towns of Lancashire.

In 1950 'The Friends of Wycoller' was formed and the group set about the enormous task of restoring the by now deserted and decaying village. Prospects looked decidedly grim however until 1973 when Lancashire County Council aquired the estate and began restoring Wycoller to its 19th century form.

The ruined 16th century hall is thought to be the Fearndean Manor of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and the bridges which span Wycoller Beck date back to at least the 16th century.

Wycoller's large aisled barn, next to the hall, is now an information centre.
