Sir William Pickles Hartley

Sir William Pickles Hartley, the man who became famous as the founder of the mighty Hartley’s jam empire, had his humble beginnings in Colne. The Hartley family have lived in the shadow of Pendle since at least 1620 and had a grocer’s shop in the area.

As the business steadily flourished and the family moved into the wholesale trade, William Hartley invistigated the possibility of making his own preserves after, it is believed, he had a disagreement with a local jam manufacturer which affected his wholesale trade. From this point on, Hartley began to develop his empire producing his own fruit and creating his own distinctive earthenware pots.

Throughout his life, he maintained a commitment to set aside money for religious or philanthropic purposes and the town of Colne was one of the recipients of this gesture. Many buildings were erected and modernised and one of those, built in 1911, was Hartley Homes which still stands today.

In the village of Trawden, just outside Colne, stands what is believed to be a monument to jam manufacturing in the area. It is an industrial jam pan, which was found in a farmer’s field in the village of Wycoller and brought back to Trawden where it remains today.
