Salley
Abbey
Known
locally as 'Sawley Abbey', these are the ruins of a former
'daughter' house to the magnificent Fountains Abbey in North
Yorkshire. Founded in 1147, Salley was never wealthy or
high status, this fact being evident from its poor quality
and crudely fashioned stonework.
There
were twenty-one monks in residence at the Dissolution and
the last abbot, William Trafford was executed for treason
on 10th March 1537 as a result of taking part in the 'Pilgrimage
of Grace'.
The
ruins of Salley Abbey are now in the care of English Heritage
who make no charge for admission to the site.
