In
1796, a clogmakers son at play on the site of a former
Roman Fortress at Ribchester discovered the bronze helmet
illustrated on the left.
It
is believed to have been used by cavalrymen for parades
and sporting events and is elaborately decorated with
battle scenes and classical figures in relief.
Ribchester
was settled by the Romans following their invasion of
England circa 55 BC. They named the settlement Bremetennacum
and constructed a large fort with granaries that covered
almost six acres.
The
helmet can be viewed online at the British
Museum.
