Mummers' Plays
In recent years, the tradition of performing Mummers' Plays at Christmas-time has been revived in the Chorley area by Stone the Crows, a side of Border Morris dancers based in Leyland.

Although there are many regional variations, the main plot of the traditional mumming play revolves around a battle between St George and an enemy who is variously called the Turkish Knight, Bold Slasher or the Black Prince of Paradise. The climax comes when one or other of the protagonists is killed; the Doctor then quickly intervenes and miraculously restores him to life. This simple story symbolises the eternal struggle of good and evil, light and dark, fertile Spring and sterile Winter.
