On
the Stage he played the role of a cheeky schoolboy, a part
he carried over into films and onto radio. He had his own
BBC radio show, "The Clitheroe Kid", which ran
for 15 years from 1957.
In
1964, he began a 5 year run in his own television series
on ITV, "Just Jimmy", with Mollie Sugden. He appeared
on stage and in films with many legendary Northern comics,
in particular Frank Randle, George Formby, Arthur Lucan
(Old Mother Riley), Nat Jackley, Ken Dodd and Hylda Baker.
His
stage act continued, largely unchanged, until the very end
of his career, as he was able to artfully project an image
of eternal youthfulness. Because of this, to the newspapers
he was always the Peter Pan of show business. He had a long
and successful career, from his professional debut in 1936
up until his death in 1973.
