George FoxGeorge Fox

George Fox climbed Pendle Hill in 1652 and there had his famous vision of enlightenment which not only led him to found the Quaker movement, but also took him, and his mission, across the Atlantic.

Of the experience, Fox wrote: 'I was moved of the Lord to go up to the top of it, which I did with much ado, as it was so very steep and high. When I was come to the top I saw the sea bordering Lancashire and from the top of this hill the Lord let me see in what places He had a great people to be gathered. And I went'.

Services were originally held in member's houses, but before long the Quakers first local meeting house was built in 1697. A house which still stands on Walverden Road, Briercliffe replaced the original meeting house in 1763.
