George Formby ~ 1904-1961

George Formby was born George Hoy Booth in Wigan Lancashire, on 26th May 1904, the son of a very successful music hall entertainer, George Formby Snr.

His career didn't take off until 1924 when he met and married Beryl Ingram, a young dancer who became his manager and helped him forge a very successful career.

In 1934 he made his first film 'Boots Boots', it was a great success although it cost very little to produce. Due to this simple but effective film, and it’s sequel 'Off The Dole'. George was offered a contract by Basil Dean and ATP productions and over the next twelve years made twenty-one films , breaking all box office records for six consecutive years.

During World War II he toured Europe, Africa, and the Middle East giving shows for the troops, his efforts being so highly regarded that he was awarded the O.B.E. After the war he went to North America and Australia although still continuing his variety shows and pantomime work in the UK..

In 1951 George starred in his first and only west End Musical 'Zip Goes A Million!'. Although he was convinced it would flop it was in fact very successful with both critics and the public. Sadly his run was cut short due to George suffering a heart attack six months after the show opened.

By 1953 he felt well enough to start touring again (mainly overseas) and performing in variety shows as well as taking-on non-singing roles in productions such as 'Too Young To Marry'.

On Christmas day 1960 his wife Beryl died, and only weeks later he announced his engagement to a school teacher Pat Howsen. Shortly before they were to wed George passed away following a massive heart attack on March 6th 1961
