In
1934 he made his first film 'Boots Boots', it was a great
success although it cost very little to produce. Due to
this simple but effective film, and it’s sequel
'Off The Dole'. George was offered a contract by Basil
Dean and ATP productions and over the next twelve years
made twenty-one films , breaking all box office records
for six consecutive years.
During World War II he toured Europe, Africa, and the
Middle East giving shows for the troops, his efforts being
so highly regarded that he was awarded the O.B.E. After
the war he went to North America and Australia although
still continuing his variety shows and pantomime work
in the UK..
In 1951 George starred in his first and only west End
Musical 'Zip Goes A Million!'. Although he was convinced
it would flop it was in fact very successful with both
critics and the public. Sadly his run was cut short due
to George suffering a heart attack six months after the
show opened.
By 1953 he felt well enough to start touring again (mainly
overseas) and performing in variety shows as well as taking-on
non-singing roles in productions such as 'Too Young To
Marry'.
On Christmas day 1960 his wife Beryl died, and only weeks
later he announced his engagement to a school teacher
Pat Howsen. Shortly before they were to wed George passed
away following a massive heart attack on March 6th 1961.
