In Lancashire, the sighting of a 'fairy funeral' was said to forecast death and such an event was often reported in woods around the Penwortham area of Preston.

One story is told of two farmworkers who met with a funeral and its cortege as it left a churchyard late one night. The younger of the two said to his mate "lets tak a sken into yon coffin", but the older, and wiser, man advised against it saying it was better to simply carry on with their journey home.

The youngster, however, insisted on removing the coffin lid and upon looking at the figure inside realised he was seeing himself. He died just a few days later.
