Downham Village

Beautifully situated beneath Pendle Hill, Downham is arguably the most delightful village in Lancashire. Completely unspoiled, the village retains an atmosphere of a time gone by and because of this is often used by film and television companies for period scenes.

Most famously, Downham was used as the location for the 1961 Richard Attenborough film 'Whistle Down the Wind' starring Hayley Mills and Alan Bates, which was taken from the novel by Mary Hayley Bell, published in 1958

Today, Downham attracts many visitors and is a lovely spot to spend a quiet afternoon. There's lots to explore, the views of Pendle are magnificent, the ducks are friendly (if you have bread!) and the beer and food at The Assheton Arms come highly recommended.
