Accrington Stanley Football Club

The name Accrington Stanley is over a hundred years old and many people make the mistake of refering to the team as the founder members of the Football League. Actually, the present Accrington Stanley are a completely different club to those original founder members. They were simply called 'Accrington FC' and that team played its last game in 1896.

Long after the demise of Accrington FC, a new team emerged in 1921 bearing the name Accrington Stanley. They played in the Third Division North Section of the Football League and although the team had the same name it was a very different club to the one which bears the name today.

The current Accrington Stanley was formed in 1968 and, despite a series of ups and downs, they have managed to retain a band of enthusiastic supporters determined to preserve the existence of the town's football club.

A meeting held at Bold Street Working-Mens Club in 1968 gave birth to the new Accrington Stanley and their manager, Jimmy Hinksman, put together a team to play in the Lancashire Combination League at a ground known as Altham Playing Fields (later to become Crown Ground).

The current Accrington Stanley played their first game against Formby Town in 1970-1971.
